I’m a bit of a HerHoopsStats junkie. I use Richard’s data to come up with scenarios in pre season question marks. Per your quote:

“If all of Richard’s contract math is accurate and I believe it to be so. The Storm will have to cut either Victoria Vivians or Joyner Holmes as the final roster cut. Although I wouldn’t rule out a scenario where they could say cut Joyner, then sometime into the season cut Dulcy and bring Joyner back at a pro-rated salary. We’ll find out what happens within the next few days.”

Do you know what the magic number is??

$639…..if they keep the vested 6 + Jordy/Nika/Jade AND Joyner & Vivians…they go over the roster cap by (only) SIX HUNDRED AND THIRTY NINE DOLLARS. Ouch. I was high on Dulcy’s potential last year, but most of that last quarter played like baby giraffe just getting their legs.

They have to keep Nika, she already showed poise and confidence (and as you’ve pointed out is the only true PG behind Sky) AND had the arena (and social media) aflutter with her debut.

My question is, do they drop to 10 players and hold $75896 of cap flexibility to grab Joyner (or another team’s cap casualty) on a prorated salary?…with it being only $639, they could probably do it after a week

I believe they must roster 11 players, but I'd love to keep 10 and explore who becomes available. I think of Vivians/Holmes/Dulcy as a cluster, each of whom has a combination of significant limitations (undistinguished playing track record) and some useful attributes (specific skill sets, cap-friendly). Ability to play the SF position (Vivians, Holmes) would be helpful, since the Storm is somewhat thin there. Ability to play in the frontcourt (Dulcy) is probably less important, since there won't likely be a lot of available minutes.

To my knowledge they must roster 11 players as Eric says. If everything holds true, it seems like they have to cut either Joyner, Victoria Vivians, or Nika Mühl. It feels like it'd be foolish to cut Nika and Vivians has been the starter and has received a lot of praise even though we haven't seen a ton on the basketball court.

The best play for the team is likely to cut Joyner. Because if they can't get her back, they at least still have Dulcy there who can fill in as a backup power forward. If they cut Vivians, they are really light on legitimate Small Forwards on the roster. If they saw Joyner ahead of Vivians at the three, then I think they would have been starting her there over Victoria. But they haven't done that. And I think it was telling when Vivians still got the start even when Jordan Horston was healthy enough to play.

For now I'm expecting that the final two cuts are Kiana Williams and Joyner Holmes. With maybe a 50/50 shot that they cut Dulcy and bring back Joyner in about two weeks from now.

Jeff, the Storm's situation really leaves me hoping that somehow, in the future, a practice squad could be negotiated into the CBA. Part of the problem for Seattle (and other teams) is that you have players who are too young to give up on (e.g. Jade, Dulcy), but who really aren't ready to be legit major contributors. These are players who need to get reps, with the ability to be activated when the inevitable injury occurs. Then you're less likely to have as many rostering shenanigans as we see now, and throughout the season. My wish list would be adding jobs through that, and by expansion.

Random question I've had: Are there any FEMALE practice players, anywhere? The practice players (limited, obviously) I've seen in college and pro ball have all been male players. Is this actually true, and if so, any idea why?
