My $60 investment put me in the 2nd tier at CPA and so far away from the court (but as close as 2nd tier would allow), that I could stay home and see the game better. We didn’t encounter even one usher to help us find our seats. I loved being there in real time but…aside from that factor, it was a disappointing experience for me. Your recap is great, as usual. I love opening my e-mail to find your posts waiting.
Just my personal opinion, but the TV copy will always be a better view. But that's not really what it's about. Growing up with Sonics games, we always had upper bowl seats near the top of the arena. But we could still see the game (albeit from far away) but it was really about spending that time with family and with other fans. Even to this day, I go to a lot of Seahawks games but I'm way up in the 300 level. I'd get significantly better views from my comfortable couch and big screen TV at home. But there's something really special about being there in person when a big moment happens, a game winning touchdown pass or a huge defensive stop. Like with the Storm, if you were there Game 5 in the 2018 semifinals against Phoenix when Sue Bird took over the game in the 4th quarter, that's such a crazy special moment in time. To say you were there in person is such a wonderful memory and experience and it doesn't matter if you were Row 1 or the last row.
I do think there will be a few hiccups here and there with Climate Pledge Arena, especially in the first few games or even throughout the first season. I know the Kraken experience got better over time from Game 1 to the final game this year. Heck, even myself now that I'm doing media work at Climate Pledge Arena I've already gotten lost multiple times going through all the tunnels under the stands trying to find different rooms back there. It's so much bigger than KeyArena. But it's a beautiful building and I think there will be a lot of wonderful memories created in it over the years.
Great column, Jeff. I especially appreciated your including the Bird-to-Jewell basket; watched it about 10 times. It brought the fans to a standing ovation. The player comments that you got -- Jewell and Noey, particularly -- are always my favorite; thanks.
