Ok, I’m a bit confused about the draft lottery. Let me see if I’ve got this, we have a better chance if Chicago misses the playoffs because they were ranked higher than us last year? So the cumulative ranking between the two years gives us slightly better odds…and if say LAS is the other team in the bottom four, they would have better position because they missed last year too?

Yes. You’ve got it right! I had to explain the very same thing last night, for the same reason. It helps to keep in mind that there are two issues: First, is a team in the lottery? If so, then what are the two year records for each team in the lottery? I think what the Storm really wants is Indiana out of the lottery and into the playoffs.

I think Eric already gave a good explanation. But yeah, ever since 2016 when Seattle got Stewie, the WNBA has done their lottery based on a two-year rule. They only combine the two year records for the four teams that miss the playoffs each year. This year we know the Storm and Mercury will be a part of that 4. The other two, one will be Indiana. If the Fever lose one more time they are out. I also think LA just needs to win one more game and Indiana would also be out. The final team to miss the playoffs will either be the Chicago Sky or the Los Angeles Sparks.

The Storm had a much better 2022 record than Indiana, Los Angeles, and Phoenix. The only team that can (realistically) miss the playoffs that had a better record than Seattle is Chicago. If the Sky miss the playoffs they will have the 4th best odds to land #1 overall pick at around 10%. That also means they are most likely to have the 4th overall pick. This also means that if Chicago does make the playoffs, then it'll be the Storm that have only a 10% chance of the #1 overall pick and most likely end up with the 4th overall pick.

Seattle wants Chicago out of the playoffs because it'll move Seattle to having an 18% chance at the #1 pick (nearly double the chances) and then even if Seattle didn't get the #1 pick they would still have a higher chance at the 2nd or 3rd overall pick compared to if Chicago makes the playoffs and then they likely end up 4th overall.

One of only three home games I missed this year but streamed the 4th quarter. What a stink fest. Probably the most frustrating loss of the year. Blowing a lead against the Liberty is understandable but tossing this one away is mind numbing. They beat themselves!
