I thought there was a solid chance she would re-sign with the Storm. But I still didn't expect her to re-sign before testing the free agency waters. But Jewell has said that her priority is happiness and being in a place that brings her joy. The Storm have always been a classy organization. They're investing into a brand new practice facility that I believe will be ready to go for next season.
At first, I didn't initially think there was a snowball's chance she stayed, but as the season progressed, I started thinking about a different set of variables that were probably more aligned with her values. It also began to make more sense that if she knew that staying Seattle met those criteria, there wasn't really a reason to wait and then wade through the free agency process, especially since there was no salary advantage to going through free agency. It seems that the extra cash to be made comes from endorsement opportunties, but that doesn't seem to be something that really fits her. Only she really knows how she arrived at the decision, but I'm glad she did. That eliminates one huge potential hole, and should allow the Storm to narrow their focus a bit. Great news...
This puts the team in a better position to look for pieces next season. They aren’t losing any key pieces to FA (unless we’re counting Gabby, but she’s been a ? because of her overseas play anyway). And they have $420K+ and a high draft pick to play with.
Stunning news that Jewell is forgoing free agency!
